Summary

A practical 2-bay 4×4 m paddock shelter designed for horses kept in open paddocks. Built with fully welded 50×50 mm RHS galvanised steel frames, 17 mm form ply kickboards, and heavy-duty galvanised mesh upper panels, the structure balances strength, airflow, and horse safety. The Monoclad® steel roof with front overhang provides shade and weather protection while the open-front layout keeps the shelter bright and ventilated. As part of the Guerilla Steel modular system, this shelter can expand into additional bays, gated holding areas, or a larger stable layout as the property evolves.

Build It Your Way

2-Bay Paddock Shelter

This 2-bay 4×4 m paddock shelter was designed as a practical, modular solution for horses kept in open paddocks. Instead of a fully enclosed stable, this structure provides reliable shade, rain protection, and airflow while still allowing horses to move freely in and out of the shelter. With its open-front design the modular panel system means the shelter can grow with the property, adding bays, gates, or enclosed areas later without rebuilding the structure.

Heavy-Duty Galvanised Steel Frame

The shelter is built around fully welded 50×50 mm RHS galvanised steel framing with double reinforced open front panel for extra strength and stability. This construction provides long-term strength, resistance to rust, and the durability required for livestock environments where structures must withstand impact and weather exposure.

Ply and Mesh Panel Combination

17 mm black form ply kickboards protect the lower half of the structure while heavy galvanised mesh above maintains airflow and visibility. This combination helps prevent kicking damage while keeping the shelter cooler and more open than solid-wall sheds.

High Roofline for Natural Ventilation

The shelter stands 2.4 metres high, allowing warm air to rise and escape through the upper mesh panels. This airflow path helps reduce heat build-up during hot Australian summers.

Monoclad® Steel Roofing

The Monoclad steel roof provides strong weather protection and durability while the front overhang increases shade coverage and helps keep entry areas dry during rain events.

What this client needed was reliable shade and weather protection in an open paddock. This two-bay 4×4 metre paddock shelter was built to meet exactly that need – a tough, practical structure that horses will actually use.

Each bay uses a fully welded 50×50 mm RHS galvanised steel frame paired with a combination wall system. Solid 17 mm form ply kickboards protect the lower section of the shelter from kicking damage and wind-driven rain, while heavy galvanised mesh above allows air and light to move freely through the structure. This keeps the space bright, ventilated, and less enclosed than traditional sheds.

The Monoclad steel roof provides dependable weather protection with generous overhang at the front, helping keep the entry area shaded and dry during storms. With an open front and 2.4m roof height, heat naturally rises and escapes rather than building up at horse level.

Just as important as the structure itself is the flexibility it provides. Because the shelter is built using the Guerilla Steel modular system, additional bays, gates, or enclosed areas can be added later. What starts as a simple paddock shelter can evolve into a larger stable or yard hub as the property grows.

Small Acreage Horse Properties

Owners with one to three horses often need a simple structure that provides shade and rain protection without committing to a full stable complex.

Spelling or Retirement Paddocks

Horses living primarily outdoors still benefit from a dry area to stand and lie down during storms or extreme sun exposure.

Agistment and Shared Grazing

Shelters like this provide reliable protection in Agistment paddocks where multiple horses share grazing space.

Day Yards and Handling Areas

A paddock shelter can also act as a central resting or holding point within larger horse properties.

Add Additional Shelter Bays

Extra bays, or Roofing can be added to increase shade coverage or accommodate more horses as the herd grows – check out the 2m rear roof on this open shelter that provides multi paddock coverage from the one shelter

Transform to a stable – Install Front Gates

Turning this setup into a fully functional stable is as easy as swapping the open panel for a front gate panel – Allowing you to turn the shelter into a secure holding area for farrier visits, feeding, or veterinary checks.

Increase Wind Protection

Upgrading to full ply panels can be installed on exposed sides of the structure to reduce wind and rain entering the shelter

Every Guerrilla Steel project follows a simple principle: build once, build right. The process focuses on practical planning, precision manufacturing, and long-term durability so the stable becomes a lasting asset—whether you plan to use it as a permanent structure or relocate and reconfigure the modular panels later.

  1. Design & Planning

The process begins with choosing the right configuration for your property, horses, and daily workflow. Stable size, layout, ventilation, and site access are considered so the structure works with your land and long-term plans.

  2. Precision Manufacturing

Each stable is fabricated in the Guerrilla Steel workshop using Australian RHS steel framing, welded panels, and durable roofing materials. Manufacturing in a controlled environment ensures consistency, strength, and long service life.

  3. Delivery & Installation

Modular panels are delivered ready for assembly. Many customers install the system themselves using the DIY friendly flat-pack design, while others choose professional installation. Either way, the modular system keeps the build straightforward and predictable.

  4. Ownership & Maintenance

Once installed, the stable becomes part of the property’s working infrastructure. Routine checks, cleaning, and occasional maintenance keep the structure performing for decades while protecting the horses inside.
