From Simple Shelter to Purpose-Built Stable
What started as a basic pergola has been completely re-engineered into a full 12m x 4m triple-bay stable system. The client wanted to keep the existing roof structure, so our team designed a retrofit system that mounted directly onto the original pergola posts.
Each bay measures 4m x 4m, built with a heavy-duty internal frame system and solid ply lower walls for durability. The upper mesh sections maximise airflow and light, a crucial factor in Queensland’s warmer climate. Designed to Handle the Weight of Cobb Horses, this Buccan build wasn’t a lightweight install. These are some of the heaviest walls we’ve ever fabricated, custom-built to safely house a team of strong, solid-bodied Cobbs. Every panel, weld, and latch was designed to take real-world impact without movement or flex.
It’s the kind of strength you can feel when you walk past it, Instead of tearing down and starting over, this retrofit made better use of what was already there. By retaining the existing pergola structure, the client saved on demolition and new materials, while gaining a professionally finished stable system that looks purpose-built from the start.

4 m bays with full mesh uppers deliver light, ventilation, and visibility to cut heat stress. This is ideal for triples or more where comfort keeps horses calm and healthy year-round.
Extend the pergola roofline forward with matching steel framing and add a lockable counter-height bench. This creates a dry, shaded area for daily feed mixing right outside the bays, keeping routines efficient without eating into stall space.
Add 20mm recycled rubber matting over high-contact lower panels in Cobb bays. absorbs heavy kicks far better than plain ply, reduces noise/vibration, and extends panel life in high-impact multi-horse use.
Upgrade this setup with a fourth recovery bay featuring two full ply panels for secure separation. A 1 m walk-through corridor or custom roof extension can connect the new bay, forming a continuous cover and central aisle
Swap standard doors for heavy-duty yokes that swing wide and self-close. This gives better horse control during feeding/handling, matches the super-heavy walls for consistency, and speeds up daily workflows in busy setups.
